Evaluation of NRC’s Better Pathways to Education and Livelihoods Programme

Client:             Norwegian Refugee Council

Duration:        2023

Geography:     Colombia, Ethiopia, Palestine, Honduras, El Salvador, Myanmar

Solutions:        Evaluation

NRC has historically supported both education and livelihoods for children and young people. In the past five years they have consolidated this into a specific youth theory of change which brings together an understanding of the multiple pathways to thriving that children and young people in crisis may follow.

The Better Pathways to Education and Livelihoods Programme brings together a portfolio of country projects which explore these different pathways, including support for school based education in Honduras, El Salvador and Colombia, support for psycho-social wellbeing in schools in Palestine, and support for youth livelihoods in Ethiopia and Myanmar.

Our evaluation of the Better Pathways programme focused on understanding how the portfolio approach worked in practice, and what has been learned from the programme about how NRC can best support multiple avenues to thriving for children and young people effected by crisis. The lessons from this evaluation will inform NRC’s future programming and further development of their approach to education and youth programming.

Key Activities:

  • Secondary analysis of monitoring, research and evaluation data and reports.

  • Primary qualitative data collection across six programme countries; Colombia, Ethiopia, Honduras, El Salvador, Palestine, and Myanmar.

  • Synthesis analysis to create a final evaluation report with recommendations for future programmes.
