Adapting the Playful Learning Across the Years (PLAY) Toolkit in Two Countries

Client: The LEGO Foundation

Duration: 2022 - 2023

Geography: Kenya, Uganda

Solutions:  Learning assessment instrument development

The Playful Learning Across the Years (PLAY) project, led by Research Triangle International (RTI) and New York University’s Global TIES for Children (NYU TIES), developed a set of tools that measure adult-child interactions within home, centre and school settings fostering learning through play. These tools are intended to be used by researchers, NGOs and governments implementing learning and education programmes for monitoring and evaluation purposes. RTI and NYU TIES have implemented a robust process to develop, contextualise and refine a set of observation and key informant-reported tools across four cultural, practice and policy contexts in Colombia, Kenya, Jordan and Ghana.

Oxford MeasurEd adapted the PLAY tool for the pre-primary level in Kenya and the pre-primary and primary levels in Uganda.  We also produced guidance for other organisations planning to use the PLAY tools in Kenya and Uganda in the future.

Key Activities:

  • Cognitive interviews and a small-sample pilot of the observation tool to adapt tools to the contexts

  • Medium-scale piloting and psychometric analysis to assess the performance of the tools and inform the selection of final items

  • Finalisation of tools and guidance for use
