Publication: Schools2030 Handbooks on Designing Learning Assessments

As part of our role as Global Learning Assessment Coordination Partner (GLACP) for the Schools2030 programme we have created tools to support teams in developing holistic learning assessment tools.

Central to this set of resources is a series of three handbooks on designing learning assessments. These three handbooks guide the reader from start to finish through the process of developing robust, contextually driven, holistic measurement tools. The handbooks are:

Handbook 1: Core Concepts in Assessment

This handbook focuses on the key considerations for all individuals and organisations looking to develop their own assessment tools. This includes:

  • Why do we measure learning, and what purposes do assessments serve?

  • How do we measure learning? The core principles of learning measurement?

  • What are validity, reliability and fairness, and why are they so important?

Handbook 2: Designing Academic Assessments

Handbook 2 builds on the core concepts by providing the user with a road map for planning the development of their assessment. This focuses on:

  • Key considerations in developing an assessment blueprint

  • Selecting and adapting items

  • Using and analysing items to develop assessment tools

Handbook 03: Measuring Non-Academic Learning

Measuring non-academic learning presents a number of specific and unique challenges. This handbook outlines for the user what they need to take into account when looking to measure non-academic learning. This includes:

  • How to define and categorise non-academic learning

  • How to select and adapt tools for measuring non-academic learning

  • How to ensure tools are contextually relevant
