Data analysis and assessment tool development for the Alfadeca Programme

The Alfadeca literacy teaching method is designed to increase students’ literacy results in Grades 1 and 2, while enhancing teacher practice and encouraging continuous improvement within educational communities. The Alfadeca team has been collecting and analysing data on pupils’ language knowledge, their socio-educational factors and teacher behaviours and engagement with the programme since 2019.  

Oxford MeasurEd has conducted in-depth data analysis to understand how learners’ resources, teacher behaviours and levels of teacher engagement are associated with growth in student learning, and how this may vary by school and learners’ starting points. In addition, we have analysed numeracy and literacy assessments to determine any necessary improvements to test items. 

Our research activities have been extended into the COVID-19 period to focus on understanding pupil engagement patterns during lockdown, the impact of the pandemic on learning, and pupils’ overall learning gains after a year in the programme. These activities will provide evidence for the Alfadeca team as well as contribute to the global evidence base on the effectiveness of distance learning-based education. 

Key Activities: 

  • Conducting multiple linear regression analysis to identify the predictors of the highest learning gains 

  • Conducting psychometric analysis of the student reading and writing assessments for Grade 1 and Grade 2 pupils 

  • Providing guidelines for interpreting and explaining results of the analysis to other stakeholders 

  • Providing support for measuring change in literacy across baseline, midline and endline assessment points of the programme 

  • Providing support for making changes to assessment items to ensure that students true proficiencies are captured as their knowledge increases
